He graduated at Marburg University in 1991 and joined the doctoral program at the European University Institute in Florence where his research focused on regionalism and populist movements in contemporary Italian society. After having received his PhD from the EUI in 1995, Oliver Schmidtke joined the Humboldt University as an assistant professor. In 1998 he left Germany, first to spend a year the Centre for European Studies at Harvard University as a research fellow and to take up a position at the University of Victoria as a DAAD professor. In 2003 Oliver Schmidtke was offered a permanent position at the University of Victoria where he has been responsible for establishing the European Studies Program.
